A lawyer and media executive, Kate Hanley is President of Digital Theory Media Consulting. Founded in 2006, Digital Theory assists traditional players identify and exploit emerging opportunities in the new digital content marketplace. The firm delivers strategic planning, research and professional education to a range of media clients including Telefilm Canada, Film Training Manitoba, On Screen Manitoba, Film Nova Scotia and the Documentary Organization of Canada.
Kate has over 18 years experience as a senior business development executive in film, television and digital media including Vice-President of Programming and Business Development for the Jim Pattison Trade Group, Director of Marketing and Business Development, S-Vox, and business affairs manager at TVOntario.
Kate’s earlier consulting experience includes heading Strategic Planning and Business Development for the award-winning media consulting firm NextMedia. There she planned business development and marketing strategy for entertainment industry clients including S-Vox, Astral Communications, The Aboriginal People’s Television Network, the Ontario Association of Broadcasters, and the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN).
Also a recognized leader in professional skills development, Kate was most recently President and Past Chair of Women in Film and Television-Toronto and the Centre for Media Professionals. Innovative professional education spearheaded by Kate, includes the Telefilm Executive Management program, providing key entrepreneurial skills to established Canadian media enterprises and a senior business certification program for Ontario media professionals in partnership with the Schulich School of Business the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities.
Kate is a frequent lecturer and writer on the business of digital media. Her columns have appeared in a variety of industry publications including Playback Magazine and Broadcast Dialogue. She is former Chair of the Entertainment, Media and Communications Section of the Ontario Bar Association, Past Chair of the Women in Film and Television-Toronto Board of Directors and former Chair of the National Corporate Committee for Unicef Canada.
